Reading between the lines

Ad from today's WSJ

Sometimes the ads in a newspaper prove more interesting and engaging than the actual news… This morning, I was struck by the overarching message in this ad. While the ad is for an open source software company, the message captures an essential quality of productive collaboration and PLNs. Intrigued by the ideas of connection and universal access, I felt compelled to investigate further and pursue more info on their website... https://www.redhat.com/en/about/company

While the tech jargon digitally danced right over my head, the descriptive language kept me captivated. For example, the company website uses language like: “enterprises work across platforms.”  How interesting.... I wonder, what constitutes an enterprise?  What distinguishes enterprises from projects or organizations? Ultimately, whatever is encapsulated inside their working definition of “enterprises” doesn’t really matter, it is the “work across platforms” portion of the statement that most intrigues me.  Working across platforms is not an isolated tech concept. In fact, it also represents the essential qualities of collaboration and PLNs. Another statement extracted from Red Hat’s homepage includes, “building flexible infrastructure solutions”. In expanding this statement beyond this company and the industry of technology, the concept gains power and purpose. I don’t know about you, but as I further develop my OLP and HRD competencies, I want to include the development of flexible infrastructure solutions, an ability to work across platforms, and maintain a focus of active participation in open source solutions.

Sometimes, reading between the lines reveals the messages that connect meaning, answer questions, and reinforce professional passions.

Focusing your lens

What’s your lens?  What do you want to focus and zoom in on?  What do you want to pull back from to examine from a broader perspective?  What angle are you striving to capture? What is your current point of view? How will it change if you shift your focus?

As I continue my quest to embed technology into my teaching and learning tool bag ( or should I say camera bag), I am struck by the realization that the World Wide Web really is a capacious world floating in a nebulous infinity of a cyber cosmos. So, with all that data and  possibility accessible with a few finger strokes and a click, it proves essential to find focus, determine the attributes of your subject that highlight the essence of what you are trying to capture, and maintain an objectivity that allows you to shift perspective.

Ta Da!  Below is a screenshot that I captured to show you how to “screenshot”….  While, traveling the world in the web, you may come across a view that you would like to capture and keep in a photo format.  Well, here is just the tool to support you.  Additionally, as Dr. Robin presented in this week’s assignments, here is a screenshot capturing my current view of Feedly. Feedly provides an accessible, organized place for you to keep your most favorite blog subjects to follow. Using this tool, you will not have to venture out into the WWW to reconnect with your favorite blogs separately; instead, they are corralled together for you in one place for easy access and sustainable use.
